The Evolution of Fāʔ-i Aʔǰamī or Voiced Bilabial Fricative Consonant Allomorph /β/ from the Old Tabari to the Mazandarani

Abstract
Sogdian, Parthian, Pahlavi, Manichaean Middle Persian and Bactrian can be mentioned among the Middle Iranian languages that have the voiced bilabial fricative allomorph /β/. The mentioned phoneme, which is also known as “Fāʔ-i aʔǰamī”‎ by the old time grammarians, is recorded in the early Islamic texts as "ف"ﭪ", " and its corrupted form "ق". But the noteworthy point is that the Sassanid Middle Persian language has no sign for this consonant in the Pahlavi script. For this reason, we can claim that what exists in the various forms of the Persian language, and especially in the subject under discussion in Tabari language , is the result of the evolution of the Tabari language itself in the new period and with a little tolerance, the ancestor of this language in the Middle Period. Despite what has been obtained from the early Islamic Persian texts and many articles that have been written about that , there is no mention of such consonant in the Tabari language. Words such as “safze” and “afrouj”, which are recorded in the old Tabari texts, clearly show this consonant in this language. We also know that the phoneme /β/ has not remained in new Iranian languages for a long time and has become evolved to the phonemes /p, b, v/ and /f/ in different types of Persian language. But in the old Tabari language and in some words in the dialects of Mazandaran, another phonetic evolution has occurred which has resulted in the production of vowels /§ō/ or /§ū/, such as “o/urūj”, “šō”, “ou/o”, “o/ukatan”, “farsiyo” and “lu”. Of course, this is not the only change for this group of words in the Mazandarani language, and in some later words, this rule is not applicable. In this article, we intend to prove the existence of Fāʔ-i aʔǰamī in Tabari language and its remnants in Mazandarani language with the historical linguistics approach and to clarify the rules that justify this phonetic evolution in Tabari language. We will also review the exceptions of the Tabari language, and refer to the rule that has replaced these evolutions. Finally, we will identify the evolution periods of the Tabari language by these findings.
