 Writing and Editing Features

 In order to speed up the preparation and editing of articles, it is strongly recommended to pay attention to the following points:

  • Adhering to standard Persian language and scientific prose and away from complicated phrases;
  • Compliance with the orthography approved by the Academy of Persian Language and Literature based on book the Persian orthography for General Use (New Edition) (Nashr-e Asar) and the spelling of the words with the Dictionary of Persian orthography& Spelling (authored by Ali-Ashraf Sadeghi and Zahra Zandi Moghaddam, published in Nashr-e Asar);
  • The necessity of using Farhangestan's approved equivalents for foreign words (based on what is stated on Farhangestan's website);
  • Editing of the article in terms of literary, technical and typography; including observing the space and semi-space between the words and placing the signs such as Tashdid (intensification), Hamzeh (Arabic “alef” “a” the sign of which is “"ء), and Harekatgozari (put final vowels of Arabic words) as necessary and far from extremes.

How to Set the Text

  • The main title of the article should be set with bold font 18 (Bold IR Lotus) and the sub-headings inside the text should be set with bold font 13;
  • The text of the article must be set in word processor 2003 (Word 2003) with IR Lotus font 13 and, in the initial submission by the author, in order to avoid confusion of fonts;
  • In-text Latin phrases should be set with Times New Roman font 11 and essential or difficult Latin names and phrases in the footnote with the same font and size 8;
  • The beginning of each clause (paragraph) should start with an indentation of 0.5 cm. Of course, the first line under each title should not be indented;
  • For the font size of the abstracts, keywords, end sources, in-text references, as well as explanatory phrases (which are placed between two brackets), direct quotations, poems (including verses and single stanzas), dates of birth and death or period of government and... (which are placed between two brackets) as well as the contents of the tables and diagrams and their related descriptions as well as the descriptions of the images, the IR Lotus font 11 should be considered;
  • Hierarchical multi-digit numbers should only be used in sectioning the article if the article requires internal reference (referring to different sections of the article). Otherwise, the article should be divided with one-digit numbers and the sub-divisions, without numbers, should be identified with a smaller font. Even, if internal reference is needed, the numbers should not exceed two digits.
  • Avoid excessive insertion of footnotes;

            - The number of footnotes on each page should start with the number 1 and, after the number, a closed arc should be placed, like this: 1); However, the number of footnotes from the beginning to the end of the article should be consecutive and, in order to distinguish from the number of footnotes, be placed between two brackets, as follows: (1);

- Abbreviations should be in parentheses and in the text. For example, "Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries" (OPEC).

             - If the financial resources of certain organizations or institutions were used in the writing of the article, this should be mentioned in the footnote.

  • All tables, graphs and figures must have serial numbers; the names/titles of the tables are on the top of the table, but the names/ titles of the graphs and figures are inserted below them.
  • The International Transliteration Alphabet (IPA) should be used in transliterating data related to unfamiliar languages or dialects;
  • Poems must be arranged within the table;
  • For the titles of books, encyclopedias and publications, which appear in the text of the article and in-text references and sources, slanted letters (Iranic/italic) are used, but the titles of the articles are placed in quotation marks (“ ”).

How to Refer to Sources

  1. 1. In-text reference
  • In-text references should be arranged between two arcs as follows: (Afshar, 1975, vol. 2, p. 200)

In-text reference method: author's last name, comma, year of publication, comma, letter "ج" )v) and volume number [if the work has multiple volumes], comma, letter "P”(ص) , page number.

  • In in-text references, if the exact same previous source (i.e. the same author but on a different page) is referenced (i.e., no new source is mentioned between the two references), the word "ibid" (همان) is used instead of repeating the name of that source; For example, in the example of "Afshar", as follows: (ibid., p. 49). Even if the exact same page from the same source is referred to, it is sufficient to mention the word "ibid" inside the parenthesis: (ibid). Of course, the words "ibid" (همان) and "ibidem" (همانجا) are used only within the scope of one page, and on the next page, if necessary, the original name appears again.

   - If another work by the same author (with a different year of publication) is immediately referred to, avoid mentioning the word "ibid" and treat it as a new independent source; That is, "Mention the name of the author + the year of publication": Example: (Afshar 1965, p. 70);

   - If an author has two or more works in a single year, letters of the alphabet are used to distinguish them. Example: (Salehi 2001 A, p. 38) and (Salehi 2001 B, p. 110).

  • In-text references to non-Persian (Latin) sources are also done exactly in the same way as Persian sources; with the difference that "ibid" is used instead of "همان".
  1. 2. Referring to the final sources
  • In the final reference list of the article, the list of articles and other works should not be separated from the list of books;
  • Bibliographical information of Persian and Arabic sources (book/authored work, translated work, article, thesis, manuscripts and documents, encyclopedias and proceedings, and websites) and Latin (with separation of Latin sources from Persian and Arabic sources) in alphabetical order in the end of the article is arranged as follows (it is worth mentioning that, for the ease of the authors' work, in each section, examples (patterns) are given first, then the explanatory form/bibliographic style of the work, and finally some principles and notes are given):
  1. a) Book

Example: Hasanli, Kavous (2012), Types of Innovation in Contemporary Iranian Poetry, Tehran, Nashr-e Thaleth.

Another example: Dehkhoda, Ali- Akbar (1982), Amthal va Hekam, vol. 3, Tehran, Amir Kabir.

Book bibliography method: author's last name, author's name (year of publication), book name in italics (Iranian iranic), book subtitle between two brackets, volume number [for multi-volume books], place of publication, publisher's name.

- In mentioning the names of old authors, their famous names and what is written on the book cover or title page are the criteria;

- avoid making black (bold) or putting the names of the works in quotation marks;

- It is necessary to mention the subtitle of the books and it is written inside the brackets and with non-itanic/Iranian non-iranic letters;

- In the name of the publisher, the word "publisher" or "publications" is not mentioned; Except for the publishers whose names include the mentioned words, such as "Nashr-e Thaleth" and "Nashr-e Markaz" and "Nashr-e Ney".

- If the publisher, place and date of publication are unknown, "Bina", "Bija" and "Bita" are used respectively.

  1. b) Translated book

Example: Berlin, Isaiah (2008), The Roots of Romanticism, translated by Abdollah Kothari, Tehran, Mahi.

Another example: Hyman, Larry M. (1990), the Phonetic System of Language (theory and analysis), translated by Yadollah Samareh, Tehran, Farhang-e Moazer.

Bibliographic method of the translated book: author's last name, author's name (year of publication), book name in italics, translator's name and surname, place of publication, publisher's name.

  1. c) Article

An example of a single-author article: Fotouhi, Mahmoud (2012), "The Interaction of Maulana Jalaluddin Balkhi with the Political Institutions of Power in Konya", Persian language and literature, 21st year, No. 19 (serial no.74), Spring and Summer, pp. 49-68.

Bibliography style of a single-author article: author's last name, author's name (year of publication), article name in quotation marks, name of the journal in italics (Iranian iranic), year/period of the journal, journal number (with the abbreviation "No.” (ش) + serial number inside bow, month/season of publication, beginning and end page of the article.

Example of an article by two/three authors: Ataei, Tahmineh and ShohrehMarefat (2013), "Poems of Qatran Tabrizi in Lobab al-Bab Treatise", history of literature, 5th period, No. 2 (serial no.71), Autumn and Winter, pp. 185-198.

Bibliographic method of a two/three-author article: first author's last name, comma, first author's name, vav-e Ataf"و" (and),+ second and third author's first and last name [+ rest of the bibliographic components of the article].

-If the number of authors of the article is more than three, it is enough to mention the name of the first author and after that in Persian articles “"و دیگرانare used and in English articles (et al.).

  1. d) Dissertation

Example: Aminpour, Qeysar (2016, PhD. thesis), "Sonnat va Noavari dar Sher-e Moaser", under the guidance of Mohammadreza Shafiei Kadkani, University of Tehran.

Dissertation bibliography style: student's last name, student's name (year of defense + comma + word "dissertation" and degree), title of the thesis in quotation marks, first and last name of the supervisor and the mention of the word "by the Guidance of" before it, the name of the university.

  1. e) Manuscripts and documents

Example: Majd Hamgar, Majdeddin Ahmad (697 AH., manuscript), Majd Hamgar's Quatrains, No. Or.3713, British Museum, Photo No. 234-235, Minovi Library, 179 pages.

Manuscript bibliography style: author's famous name (within the arc of the year of creation + comma + mention of the word "manuscript"), title of the book or handwritten treatise or photocopy (in italic/ Iranian Iranic letters), copy number, place of storage, number of pages.

- When referring to historical documents, these items are mentioned: document title, classification and access number, archive name;

- When referring to microfilms, in addition to the book specifications, it is also necessary to mention the microfilm number and storage location;

- If the name of the author of the manuscript is unknown, the title of the document is placed at the beginning.

  1. f) Encyclopaedia entry or article published in books and proceedings

An example of an encyclopedia entry: Dadbeh, Asghar (2002), "Bath-al-Shakwa", in Great Islamic Encyclopaedia Foundation, vol. 11, under the supervision of Kazem Mousavi Bojnourdi, Tehran, Center of Great Islamic Encyclopaedia, pp. 343-345.

Another example: Movahhed, Mohammad-Ali (2009), "Soluk al-Moluk", in the Persian language and literature encyclopedia, vol. 3, under the supervision of Esmail Saadat, Tehran, Persian Language and Literature Academy Center, pp. 729-731.

An example of an article published in a book or Proceedings: Sadeghi, Ali Ashraf (1984), "Standard Language", in the collection of lectures of the first Persian Writing Seminar, Tehran, Markaz-e Nashr-e Daneshgahi, pp. 45-55.

The style of bibliography of an encyclopedia entry and article...: author's last name, author's name (year of publication), title of the entry or article in quotation marks, mention of the letter “در" (in) (in non-Italic letters) + title of encyclopedia or proceedings (with Italics/Iranic letters), volume number, name of supervisor, collector, editor, supervisor, place of publication, publisher's name, number of the beginning and end pages of the entry or article.
