Emotion is one of the main components of literature in fiction works and, according to new findings in cognitive sciences, it implies awareness; in this sense, emotional behavior is the two elements of consciousness and feeling associated with it; not that it is thoughtful or conscious. In the stories, the language type and the tone and speech of the narrator and the characters express the type of feeling and how they understand the phenomena and existence. Therefore, in this research, in order to understand and receive the cognitive and value content of emotional speeches and behaviors, two novels, Journey to Heading 270 Degrees and All Quiet on the Western Front, have been compared and analyzed.
These two novels are clear examples to explain the simultaneous function of emotion and thought, because - despite the similarity of side variables such as the age and gender of the main and secondary characters - the space of the story, the initial motives and the angle of view, etc., basically, due to the ideological difference, they reveal two different emotional and cognitive structures in relation to war. The method of analysis in this research is descriptive-analytical based on the phenomenological philosophical ideas of Western and Islamic thinkers and is not based on the opinions and theories of a particular thinker or school. In this analysis, it has been shown how the characters, at every moment of the story, under the influence of their attitudes and experiences of their lives - when facing each other, the harsh conditions of war, being away from family, sleeplessness, hunger and ultimately death - have different states and behaviors.
In the novel, All Quiet on the Western Front which is a special work mixed with sharp analyzes about humans and existence, the characters reach absurdity and failure in the course of their cognitive and emotional evolutions; While in the novel Journey to Heading 270 Degrees - which is a realistic and gentle work - the cognitive flow in transcendental emotions creates a mindset of maturity and evolution of characters in the audience.
