Sharḥ-e Makhzan al-Asrār, authored by Ibrāhīm Tattawī, a scholar and judge of the Indian subcontinent in the eleventh century AH, is one of the commentaries written on Nezami Ganjavi’s Makhzan al-Asrār. Due to the author’s mastery of various disciplines-including Qur’anic verses, hadith, mysticism, botany, zoology, medicine, philosophy, astronomy, music, lexicography, grammar, and literary arts-and his attention to the subtleties of the verses in this masnavi, this commentary is a scholarly work. Composed in 1037 AH, it draws on sources such as Ṣarāḥ, Qāmūs, Farhang-e Ibrāhīmī, Sharafnāma, and Toḥfat al-Saʿādat.
This study, employing a source-critical and descriptive-analytical methodology, provides a brief introduction to Qāẓī Ibrāhīm Tattawī and presents the Sharḥ-e Makhzan al-Asrār along with its stylistic characteristics. Findings indicate that the work’s linguistic features include a high density of Arabic words, phrases, and sentences-reflecting the commentator’s Arabic influence-use of parenthetical sentences, rearrangement of sentence components, and long adjectival and genitive constructions.
