Critical discourse analysis is an interdisciplinary approach which scrutinizes texts in order to present a relatively accurate reading of it. This study aims at discovering the way that the political, social and cultural issues are reflected in Seyyed Hasan Hosseini’s short poems by the use of critical discourse analysis in order to explain the mutual relationship between poetry (as text) and the society and then reveal the discourses present in his poetry. From among the different approaches in critical discourse analysis, this essay employs “Fairclough’s methodology of critical discourse analysis” since this method is believed by most researchers to be the most comprehensive method. Fairclough’s analysis rests on three levels of text analysis (description), processing analysis (interpretation) and social analysis (explanation). In this study, a selection of short poems from the collection Noushdarou-ye Tarh-e Jenerik (The Generic Design Panacea) are analyzed in order to extract the ideological elements in the three analytical levels of contextual, formal, and individual and social. The study reveals that the formal characteristics of Seyyed Hasan Hosseini’s poetic language, such as sounds, words, verbs, semantic and synonymous relations, phrases, and formal and semantic coherence of his poems are all loaded with discursive values which give an ideological aspect to his poetry. Therefore, the aim of the researchers is to reveal the existing discourses in Hosseini’s poetry and their relationship with social structures in the society. The dominant discourses in Seyyed Hasan Hosseini’s poetry are discovered to be social, cultural, intellectual, moral and political discourses. The most dominant discourse in the poetry of this poet who belongs to the first generation of Islamic Revolution poets is the social discourse revolving around the Islamic Revolution.
