In the digital age, new communication technologies and tools have brought about profound changes in the use of language. By opening up new arenas for virtual communication, the Internet has created a new role for language, referred to as the “virtual communication role.” This role is mainly manifested in the form of oral or written speech, and allows users to use language in more informal and creative contexts. It is clear that not all languages have benefited equally from this opportunity. Languages that lack a digital infrastructure or a standard writing system are at risk of extinction in the digital space. Despite the potential to preserve linguistic diversity, the Internet has not been able to fully reflect this diversity due to the dominance of dominant languages such as English. Only about 250 languages out of more than 6,000 in the world have an active presence in the digital space, and many minority languages have been exposed to “digital death.” As a key tool in digital communication, speechwriting can help preserve and revitalize endangered languages, enable the use of local languages in social media, messaging, and web writing, and contribute to the intergenerational transmission of languages. In order to increase linguistic diversity in the digital space, in addition to the use of speechwriting, measures such as documenting languages, designing multilingual digital tools, and strengthening the role of local languages in education and media are essential. Finally, despite the challenges, the Internet has great potential to enhance the status of languages and preserve linguistic and cultural diversity, provided that targeted policies and international cooperation are strengthened in this area.
